"The Burden Hardest to Bear"

Transformers Classic/Future Episode #93

Written by Michael Charles Hill

"I am sick and tired of being responsible for the preservation of the universe and its outlying suburbs."

As the conflict between the Autobots and Decepticons spreads to other parts of the world like Japan, the community is growing concerned that the Transformers are disrupting tourism and business by frightening the populace.  After a skirmish between Defensor and Bruticus, the Prime Minister of Japan calls Rodimus Prime in for a conference.  Rodimus is sympathetic, but doesn't know what to do--his Autobots managed to stop the Decepticons; what more do they want from him?  Rodimus is feeling overwhelmed with responsibilities.  When Marissa Faireborn shows up and says Earth Defense Command needs him, Rodimus decides he's had enough and drives off.

Meanwhile, Dead End and Wildrider have been left behind on Earth to scout for Autobot activity.  When they spot Rodimus, the Stunticons pursue him, eventually forcing him off the road and over a cliff.  When they go to have a closer look at the wreck, they discover the Autobot Matrix of Leadership, which fell out of Rodimus during the crash.  They abscond with it back to Chaar.

After Marissa discovers Rodimus, now Hot Rod, he is taken back to Autobot City.  The other Autobots are bent on immediately relocating the Matrix, but Hot Rod isn't too keen on the idea.  He's completely fed up with his role as leader, resigning from command and once again running off.

On Chaar, the Stunticons give the Matrix to Galvatron.  He tries to install it in his arm cannon, but the spirits of the ancient Autobots energe and order hi to return the Matrix.  Galvatron tells them he will, but as soon as they disappear, he orders Scourge to destroy the Matrix.  Instead, Scourge--recognizing the Matrix as a potential power source--inserts the Matrix into his chest.  It transforms him, mutating him into a larger, stronger, lumpy version of Scourge, who immediately disposes of Galvatron, and then Cyclonus.  He commands the remaining Decepticons to follow him for an assault on Earth.

Hot Rod confers with a Japanese sensei who is training a student, Oso.  The sensei instructs him not to focus on winning, because that can't be done without considering its opposite, defeat.  Rather than expecting to win or lose, Hot Rod is instructed to concentrate on his obligations--his giri.  With that, Hot Rod resolves to reclaim the Matrix.  He locates Scourge, who attacks him with powers he has gained from the Matrix.  Hot Rod overcomes him, though, and realizes that not only does the Matrix belong to him, but he belongs to the Matrix.  Galvatron later locates Scourge and punishes him appropriately.
