"My function is to further science and learning, not destroy innocent life forms!"
The Decepticons' latest plan is to drain the heat-energy from energy-rich green crystals, which partially comprise the Earth's core. Operating out of the Arctic Circle, tunneling throughout the region, the heat-drain causes the temperature to drop around the world. While Spike and the Autobots are having a good time snowball fighting in July, Optimus Prime is deeply concerned. He uses Teletran I to trace the source of Earth's problems.
Meanwhile, Skywarp and Rumble discover a gigantic robot buried in the ice while tunneling. Starscream explains that he and this robot--named Skyfire--had been explorers on Cybertron before the war broke out. They were examining Earth when Skyfire had been caught in a polar wind storm and lost. After the Decepticons reactivate Skyfire, Megatron orders him to swear allegiance to the Decepticons. Grateful for his life, Skyfire agrees.
Once the Autobots arrive, Skyfire attacks. When Spike and Sparkplug are trapped on an ice floe, however, Skyfire, curious about the Earth creatues, saves them. When they accuse him and the other Decepticons of being evil, Skyfire is indignant. Determined to prove he will not harm them, he takes the humans to Megatron so they can see for themselves. Of course, Megatron immediately imprisons them.
Meanwhile, the Autobots search the hundreds of underground tunnels, trying to locate Spike and Sparkplug. Gears, Ratchet, Ironhide and Hound stumble upon the Decepticon operation, but when the Decepticons spot them, Skyfire refuses to fire on them. Incensed, Starscream blasts his former partner, then fires on the Autobots. When the smoke clears, only dismembered Autobot parts remain.
Moments later, Skyfire stirs, and finds the Autobots unharmed; Hound used a hologram to trick Starscream. Ratchet works on repairing Skyfire. Neaby, Laserbeak observes this and transmits the information to Megatron, who orders an immediate attack. During the battle, Optimus and Megatron fight each other with shards of the green crystal. When Megatron orders Skyfire to terminate Optimus, Skyfire refuses--ripping off his Decepticon insignia and replacing it with an Autobot one. Skyfire and Starscream engage in an aerial dogfight, which Skyfire wins. He then uses up his last bit of strength to collapse the tunnels, burying the crystals and causing the Earth to return to normal.
Transfacts:
- The character of Skyfire was based on the toy named Jetfire. The Jetfire toy was originally created by Bandai, a Japanese toy company who also happened to be the main rival of Takara, the manufacturer of Transformers in Japan. Since Takara wanted the Transformers series to air in Japan as well, they changed the character's name and appearance, which allowed his inclusion in the series.
- Optimus Prime's Combat Deck makes a second appearance in this episode, although it looks different than it did in "More than Meets the Eye" part 3.
